Broadgreen
A tired Victoria townhouse
The dream
Emma and Thomas were struggling to realise their dream in the small Victorian courtyard garden they were faced with. They wanted areas for entertaining and generally enjoying the garden when their busy lives allowed.
The front garden was very tired, Emma and Thomas where very keen to retain a traditional feeling to the front garden but with a contemporary twist

Our Insight
The garden was very narrow and the previous occupant of the house had breached the damp proof course across the entire rear elevation of the property, we needed to resolve this issue before going forward.
We realised that the garden needed to feel wider but also provide planting and areas of seating, the high boundary walls were also enhancing the feeling of enclosure.
The front garden was not achieving what the clients needed from the area, the existing hedge had become an issue with regards to blocking light and making the retaining wall unstable to the adjacent road.

Making the dream a reality
The first issue was reducing the existing levels across the site, we removed 60 tonnes of soil to enable the new porcelain paving to be installed at the correct levels. A new sleeper retaining wall was installed to provide raised planting beds and soften the wall that had previously been so intimidating within the garden.
An artificial lawn was installed to provide a multi weather surface for entertaining and a further seating area was installed in the corner that has a cosier feel.
The front garden was opened with the removal of the hedging, a new retaining wall was constructed using the existing bricks. Formal planting was installed to soften the hard landscaping but keeping a feeling of sense of place to honour the building. A wider driveway was installed with complementary paving to enhance the scheme and the house.
