Contemporary Practicality
Brief
For this large rear garden in Woolton, we were asked to completely transform the tired and dilapidated garden into a contemporary entertaining space, whilst ensuring it still felt inviting and practical. Low maintenance nature friendly planting and plentiful seating areas were on the top of their wish list for our busy professional client. The existing granite setts were proving very difficult to maintain and dramatically sloped towards the house in places breaching the damp proof course. The low stone wall gave a negative feeling of enclosure from the main garden. The only area for entertaining was directly onto the uneven cobbled surface outside the doors. The client also wished for an area within the garden for a fire pit.
Solution
After a brief exchange of emails a design was commissioned and approved. The imposing tree in the center of the scheme needed to be incorporated into the design. The large open planned steps lead the client into the garden and naturally to the left where an additional paved area with raised beds and fire pit was installed.
The introduction of the sleeper walls enabled us to improve the soil conditions and establish nature friendly planting as requested.
Outcome
The garden now functions as a practical contemporary space with areas of paving set within the lawn and planted areas. The fire pit sits naturally within a raised seated area constructed out of the reused granite setts and paved tops. The new paving outside of the main doors has encouraged the client to spill out into the garden, which has finally become an outdoor room to complement the house.
